JACK AND DANIELLE MAYER have been full-timers for the past ten years, and it is the fulfillment of a dream. They are definite advocates of fifth-wheels, citing the fact that a towable is much more livable than most motorhomes, has more storage space, and provides more value for the dollar. Because Jack and Danielle are outdoors a lot and because the many windows in their unit make the space light and airy, they have never felt a sense of confinement.
Their towing vehicle is a converted 1999 Volvo 610 with a 182” wheelbase. This tractor is pushed by a Cummins ISM with a 400 hp/1450 lb/ft of torque. Jack says that a used HDT (including the conversion) is affordable since it averages less than a comparable new MDT. These vehicles are made to travel over the road a million miles or more, so even a used tractor with 500,000 miles has great potential. Jack does say that a class 8 converted tractor is not for everyone, but its usability, comfort, safety, and power have no comparison.
Jack and Danielle workamp in the summer. They decide on an area they would like to see and then find a job in that area, giving them a “free” base for exploring. As campground hosts, they act as a presence in the campground, performing fee compliance and helping campers with questions. Generally, they work a 2 on/4 off schedule which leaves them plenty of time for their own activities.
As a former computer scientist, Jack is very knowledgeable about the technology involved in designing an RV. AND he’s easy to talk to – you’ll enjoy making his acquaintance.
